El Niguel is a private member owned golf club incorporated in 1976 by twenty three Founders on land originally known as Rancho Niguel.
A Spanish expedition arrived in 1769, which was the beginning of the Mission period so familiar to Californians. The Mission Fathers of San Juan Capistrano named the area to the North Rancho Niguel, its title being held by the King of Spain.
Following Mexican Independence a grant of Rancho Niguel was made to Juan Avila and from then until 1959 through a seccession of private owners, it was operated primarily as a cattle ranch.
Reminders of the History are all around us in the names of streets, creeks, residential developments and shopping centers. Lewis Moulton was one of the owners of Rancho Niguel and his name appears frequently along with that of his wife, Nellie Gail. The King of Spain has not been forgotten; hence, Crown Valley Parkway, Monarch Bay and the crowns in the El Niguel's Logo!
