Our Story

El Niguel Country Club is situated on the Rancho Niguel land grant of Juan Avila, land claimed by the Spanish in 1769.

The 18-hole golf course was opened for play in 1963 on land previously used for cattle ranching. The course was built by the Laguna Niguel Corporation as an inducement to developers in the area; the clubhouse was simply two model homes on the #10 tee. The present clubhouse was built in 1972.

El Niguel Country Club was incorporated as a member-owned club in 1976 by a group of 23 Founders, and the golf course, the clubhouse and the associated property were purchased by the Club. By 1980 all 485 Equity memberships were sold.

El Niguel Country Club boasts an 18-hole championship golf course. The course is 7,220 yards of beautiful terrain that poses a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. The course features rolling hills, three lakes and a meandering creek throughout the property.  Our membership, and Todd Eckenrode of Origins Golf Design, committed to executing our long range master plan for the golf course with a very clear mission.  The first phase began with a significant turf reduction landscaping project in partnership with our local water agencies.

Most recently we completed this long range plan for the course with an extensive renovation. The inherent beauty, splendor and natural character of course has been highlighted by our recent renovation by adding more variety and interest to our green complexes and green surrounds. The renovation also included all new bunkers throughout the course, relocation and removal of cart paths, and realignment of several fairways to better incorporate the creek into the design. The significant improvements to the golf course have improved strategies, playability and variety for all levels of play.

The clubhouse has also been upgraded many times since 1972. Our most recent long range plans for the clubhouse began in 2012 with the main floor of the building followed by renovation of the Men's and Ladies' Locker Rooms in 2016.  To ensure that we continually improve on what we believe is the finest country club in Orange County, we remain committed to continuous future improvements to both the golf course and clubhouse facilities. The dedication of the member-owners ensures that continuous future improvements will always be a top priority.
